Mangrove Music on Marco Island announces the exciting release of Steel Away!, a new steel drum recording from 5th generation Floridian and talented local musician J. Robert Houghtaling. The new production is a serious focus on steel drum instrumentals which capture J.Robert’s signature sound known as “Florida fusion.” J. Robert has blended classic calypso, Beatles, Cat Stevens and fun retro pop tunes. Steel Away! has a polished tropical jazz, world rhythm resonance laced with the tones of Latin percussion, authentic rake’n’scrape guitar, and reggae “bubble” organ. Steel Away! provides a sincerely joyful celebration of Florida’s sun, sand and sea.
Steel Away! was produced for people who love steel drum music, and it includes a musical menu of all the most requested songs. Steel Away! is a tribute to some of the finest steel drum performers to live in Naples, Florida, including “Sir George” Richards, Mark Pettey, and Kenneth Charles, brother of Trinidadian steel pan star Rudolph “the Hammer” Charles. “I simply wish to share my passion for this relatively new and popular musical instrument,” quotes J. J. Robert presents his Florida fusion style music at hundreds of top corporate and private celebrations in SW Florida and continues to support community events such as Big Arts of Sanibel, the South West Florida Conservancy, WGCU Membership Campaign, and Marco Island YMCA. A dedicated musician, J. Robert has long been associated and play fiddle with Chief Jim Billie of the Florida Seminole/Miccosukee Tribe. He’s also performed warm up shows for Jimmy Buffett, John McEuen - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Charlie Daniels, Doug Kershaw, Hoyt Axton, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Coasters, Drifters, Travis Tritt, David Allen Coe, and Asleep at the Wheel.
